Adobe Acrobat
Many online journals require special software for viewing/printing journal
articles. The most common by far is Adobe Acrobat Reader. These
are often called "PDF" files. Acrobat Reader software is free, and once
you have downloaded and installed it, your Web browser will automatically launch it to
display any Reader files you click on. Follow the link above to get a copy if you
have not done so already.
Real Page
Real Page is another, much less commonly used
viewer. Some journals on OCLC's "ECO" system require it; these files are
called "RIF" files. There is no reason for you to download and
install RealPage until/unless you do find an RIF file that you want to read.
RealPage is free, but the first time you use it, you will be prompted to register
it. However, there is an option you can choose to use it without registering.
Also, be aware that the Real Page installation program may not automatically update your
Web browser to use Real Page when viewing RIF files. If you have already installed
Real Page and still get prompted to choose an application program when you try to view an
RIF file, then choose browse, then C:\REALPAGE\REALPAGE.EXE as your viewer. From
then on, your browser should open RealPage automatically when you click on RIF files. |
